In this article we explain how bleeding occures in garvure print and how to avoid it.

Bleeding (gravure print)

The smearing, which also bleeds from the printed area into the unprinted area, is often a sign of poor colour tolerance to moisture or an incorrect drying time of the ink. In some cases, a too flat doctor blade setting can lead to bleeding.

Solutions to bleeding:

  • Ensure the correct web temperature for the substrate and the increase heating temperature or air flow.
  • Check the viscosity of the ink and adjust it with solvents or additives if necessary.
  • Verify the drying time of the ink and add quicker drying solvents if necessary.
  • Inspect the doctor blade angle and flatten it if necessary.
