Trouble Shooting in gravure print

Screening (gravure print)

In this article we explain how screening occures in garvure print and how to avoid it.

Screening (gravure print)

The images to be printed appear washed out at the inlet of the engraved area. This happens across the web running direction. It can occur in solid colour, but is much more visible in halftone. Usually the cell bars are visible in the printout.

Solutions to screening:

  • Check ink viscosity and add thinner or correct solvent.
  • Verify the ink drying times and reduce them if necessary.
  • Inspect the doctor blade setting, reduce too hard settings by bringing the doctor blade forward or use thinner supporting doctor blades.
  • Check doctor blades' angle for excessive doctor blade angle and reduce it if necessary.
  • Check and adjust the doctor blades' contact pressure. Only use as much contact pressure as necessary.
  • Check the impression roller pressure and shore hardness of the impression roller in relation to the substrate and adjust or change if necessary.
