Life-time & cutting quality (standard & high performance multi groove knife blocks)

Why must you frequently change your slitter knives? How can you optimize the cutting quality and reduce dust? How can you improve life-time and cutting quality?

Non acceptable life-time and cutting quality can result from the following:
  • Wrong choice of knife quality (top to bottom knife)
  • Knife chips and breakouts
  • Slitter jumps (top knife damages the bottom knife or multi groove knife block)
  • Knife geometry and tolerances are not in line with the OEM specification and guideline or does not fit to the product to be cut.
  • Multi groove knife blocks for automatic knife positioning systems
  • Grinding errors or mistakes
  • Tight tolerances of the multi groove knife block is not matched in production

How to improve life-time and cutting quality
In principle, we differentiate between two different types of multi groove knife blocks. This is either the standard product, which is used on conventional winders or the high-performance tools which are used on high performance winders such like Goebel. The standard tools do not require tightest tolerances in view of the tooth pitch or runout. The high-performance tools demand extremely narrow tolerances in order to prevent accidents, machine defects or other negative consequences during production.

Whereas a tooth pitch of +/- 0,1mm is entirely sufficient for the standard multi groove knife blocks, require the tools for high performance applications a tooth pitch up to 0,01mm and an extreme radial runout. Furthermore, in most cases they must be professionally balanced prior to the first application.

We recommend:

We offer TKM multi groove knife blocks with either one or two cut edges per tooth, with a recess angle or a 90° cutting angle.

Additionally, top knives (circular dished knives or flat knives) matching the multi groove knife blocks are also available. In most of the cases, circular dished knives can be replaced by flat knives in order to optimize the cutting results.

In case of request, TKM also offers quality and measurement protocols for critical pitch sizes and tolerances. This is also guaranteed for our regrinding-service.

Ask our service specialists for the best set-up procedures and the most cost-effective cutting solutions. Book our best practice “slitter training courses”, this will optimize and streamline your cutting processes.
