Chipping Rotary Slitter Knives

  • Slitter knives’ cutting edges may break out or chip. Mainly the root cause is a mechanical overload.
  • The following reasons may cause chipping of slitter knives :
    • Horizontal cutting clearance too small or too big
    • Vertival overlapping ; too much
    • Mechanical deformation
    • Mechanical overload
    • Material fatigue (period of usage between grinding service too long)
    • Wrong knife material
    • Wrong knife hardness
  • Usually the slitter knives could be re-sharpened and used again.
  • In case of wrong knife material or hradness there is no possibility of reworking. The slitter knives blades must be replaced

In the following figure we will show you some of the most common reasons for slitter knife chipping.

 

Another common reason for chipping of rotary slitter knives or non sufficient cutting result (high burr at the strip edge) could be a too late regrinding service.

Please: Regrind your rotary slitter knives in time!


To increase the longevity of your products the storage is another major topic. Rotary slitter knives are high precision tools and need be handled and stored accordingly.

Always store only clean and preserved carefully. Avoid the risk of corrosion!
