# Chipping scrap chopper knives

## Chipping scrap chopper knives

- Scrap choppers cutting edges may break out or chip. Mainly the root cause is a mechanical overload. Often the cutting clearance was not adjusted according to the material that has to be cut. Side trimming units usually do not have an automatic cutting clearance adjustment.
- Another root cause could be material double layers in the scrap chopper unit. It may occure frequently.
- Too long operating time between regrinding service (material fatigue) could also be a root cause.
- It is also possible that wrong knife material and/or wrong hardness was selected.

- Usually the knives could be ground and used again.
- If the wrong knife material was selected, the scrap choppers must be replaced.
- Adjustement of set-up parameters, if possible.
